Let's continue on with "unblurrying" your business.  So far we've looked at what it means to have a 'blurry business' and the impact of when there is something wrong with your mission statement - or of not having one.

Do you have a written business philosophy, including:

Five Objectives

Your objectives in undertaking this project are:

  1. To capture and state those good driving forces which exist but which as yet are unrecorde.
  2. To help your employees see and understand why you are in business and to allow everyone to measure their commitment to it.
  3. To so place the mission before your people that they will re-commit to it.
  4. To provide an instrument by which you can capture valuable insights and suggestions from your people.
  5. To allow each person or department the opportunity to fine-tune individual objectives.

How long will this take?

I doubt this can be done in the first reading.  It might take a day.  It might take a month of evenings with the TV turned off.

Five things you will get:

  1. Everyone to 'own' the goals of the organisation and for every person to understand the big picture:
  2. An open statement of your Mission:  Why you are here.
  3. A strong concept of exactly what your organisation or department plans to achieve:  What you are going to do.
  4. An opportunity  Where everyone fits in.
  5. A clear understanding of the way you want to manage your resources:  Your people, your facilities, your client base and your finances:  How you intend to do things.

It's a foundation

Once you've done it you can:

  • Take the initiative in your business and your market sector; to take the ball on the front foot as it were; to be pro-active rather than reactive.
  • Experience better teamwork, co-ordination between staff or across departments.
  • Draw on the experience and skill of your staff.

Stop procrastinating ... get busy!
