You Don't Understand the Purpose of Being in Business...

Profit's OK

The purpose of business is two-fold:  profit and service.

If it's profit alone you have the purpose of the extortionists and the street gangs.  If it's service alone then you have the purpose of St Vincent de Paul and the Salvos.  Without service, you're a dressed up hoodlum;  without profit you're a welfare worker.

Let's be clear about what profit means:

  • It doesn't mean charging higher than fair prices for commonplace goods and services;
  • It doesn't mean that you make profit by paying employees, contractors and suppliers less than what is due to them or making them wait longer than they should for their payments;
  • It doesn't mean that you make profit by following a policy of haste and greed, ripping out and destroying resources with no regard for the future and the people who will live in it.
  • It doesn't mean ignoring the well-being of other people with whom we have business dealings.

But it does mean that if you don't run your business for profit you will not be in business for long.  And it also means that with all the illegal and unscrupulous practices barred, the only way to make that profit is through providing GREAT service.
